Integrating sphere light sources provide uniform radiance or irradiance

An internally illuminated integrating sphere provides spatially uniform luminance and illuminance which is perfect for flat-field correcting and calibrating imaging systems, calibrating photometers and spectroradiometers and for testing detector arrays and remote sensing instruments. Integrating sphere-based sources exhibit a luminance uniformity at the 98-99% level over the full exit port area, which is significantly higher than can be achieved using alternative techniques.

The standard Labsphere uniform light sources vary in size from 6 inches (15cm) up to 65 inches (1.65m) diameter, with exit port sizes from 2 inches (5cm) up to 22 inches (56cm). Most of the sources employ one or more tungsten halogen lamps but the XTH sources seamlessly combine the output of an incandescent lamp with a xenon discharge source to boost the sphere's output in the blue part of the spectrum which matches the spectral power of the D65 standard daylight illuminant. Depending upon the model chosen, the luminance can be adjusted step-wise by turning one or more of the internal lamps on or off, or the brightness can be adjusted continously by means of externally mounted lamps with variable attenuators with manual or motorised control.
